Yes, you need a new pillow.
Pillows make a big difference in how you sleep, confirms leading sleep researcher James B. Maas, PhD, a professor of psychology at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and author of Power Sleep (HarperCollins). Says Maas, "Three out of four American adults are sleep deprived, and a comfortable pillow is one simple aid we can use to get a good night's sleep." So while most of us overlook the pillow and only focus on finding the ideal mattress, experts say finding the right pillow is equally important.

"If you're waking up with headaches, neck pains, shoulder and arm numbness, or discomfort - sometimes even sneezing or wheezing - your pillow may be playing a role," says orthopedic surgeon Andrew Hecht, MD.

Old pillows can also be a breeding ground for some disgusting bedmates. According to Dr. Philip Tierno, Director of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at New York University, "The monster may not be under you bed, but actually in it." The typical pillow contains dust mites, bacteria and fungi, bodily secretions, perspiration, insect parts and more. In fact, after five years of using a pillow, 10% of the weight is made up of dust mites and dust mite feces. Yuck! Equally frightening is that you're inhaling these microbial particles eight hours a day. And if you have allergies or asthma it can exacerbate them and even cause additional allergies later on.

The general rule, say the experts, is to purchase a new pillow every 12 to 18 months and definitely toss your old one after two years.

Choosing the ideal pillow.
Experts say to let your sleep position be your guide. "The goal of using a pillow is to help keep your head in what is called a 'neutral alignment,' meaning your head is sitting squarely on your shoulders without bending back too far or reaching too far forward," says Kammi Bernard, PT, a physical therapist at the Baylor Health Care System in Dallas, Texas.

Think about the distance your head is from the mattress depending on your sleeping position. Side sleepers need a thicker pillow to fill the void between the head and the shoulders. Back sleepers need thinner pillows to keep the head from being thrown too far forward. Also look to cradle the neck with an extra bit of loft in the bottom third of the pillow, nearest your neck. Stomach sleepers need a thin, almost flat pillow. Though most experts agree that stomach sleeping is not an ideal posture for proper spinal alignment.

Beyond determining the ideal pillow for your sleeping position, it all comes down to personal preference. Pillows come filled with almost anything, including down, foam and polyester fiberfill. Specialty pillows like the ComforPedic® memory foam pillows are a good alternative for those who appreciate the conformability and support of memory foam. Natural Care® by Simmons offers a line of latex pillows that are naturally resistant to dust mites, mold and mildew.

Whatever your choice, you can sleep easy knowing you'll be giving your head, neck, and respiratory system a fresh resting place every night.
