How Much Sleep Do I Need?

Google it all you want, but there’s no one-size-fits-all answer for how much sleep you need. Sleep is a very individual activity that’ll depend on your age, activity rate, and even just what makes you feel good. Some people just feel better when they sleep for longer and others prefer waking up early.

It totally depends on you.

But that being said, just because there isn’t a hard-fast number that is the answer for YOU, doesn’t mean that you should cut corners when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. 

Sleep is important.

It helps your body heal and repair itself from the physical and mental stresses that you feel throughout each day. If you don’t get enough Zzzs in your day, then those parts of you that need repairing start to stack up.

How Much Sleep Do You Need By Age?

Some might only need 5 hours of sleep, others may need 9 hours. How much really depends on you and your individual body. But if you want to know how much sleep you need, try starting with these sleep recommendations from the CDC’s website.

They’re based on age because as you get older your sleep patterns change.

  • Newborn (0–3 months old) 14–17 hours
  • Infant (4–12 months old) 12–16 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • Toddler (1–2 years old) 11–14 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • Preschool (3–5 years old) 10–13 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • School Age (6–12 years old) 9–12 hours per 24 hours
  • Teen (13–18 years old) 8–10 hours per 24 hours
  • Younger Adult (18–60 years old) 7 or more hours per night
  • Older Adult (61–64 years old) 7–9 hours
  • Seniors (65 years old and older) 7–8 hours

So if you’re feeling a little groggy in the morning, check out these recommendations, make sure you’re getting the recommended amount of sleep, and adjust according to what feels best for you.

Just make sure you go to bed early enough that you don’t sleep in too late.

Is 6 Hours Enough Sleep?

Maybe, but probably not.
